5 Ways to Create a Winter Wonderland in Your Bedroom

by Pam Silvia

1. Nail a wintery color scheme

Been dreaming of a white bedroom? Let it snow with ivory bedding and cozy white accents like pillows and throw blankets while dispersing touches of silver and gold for modern sophistication. Or take cues from the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, and have a blue Christmas with azure décor replete with wintery motifs, like snowflakes and glittery swirl patterns. Or, if “chestnuts roasting on an open fire” is more your speed, you can cultivate a rustic ambiance with buffalo plaid in warm, festive hues like crimson and dark emerald—especially when they are backdropped by wood furniture.

Whatever you decide, a cohesive color scheme with seasonal elements will help you ring in the holidays with flair.

2. Accessorize with soft textures

Nestle all snug in your bed while visions of cashmere and sherpa fleece dance in your head—baby, it’s cold outside, so take your comfy blankets out of storage! Evoke the softness of whiskers on kittens and warm woolen mittens by draping knit throws along the foot of your bed, on top of your futon and on the back of your desk chair. To avoid clashing with any festive décor, we recommend showcasing neutral-toned blankets.

Texturize your room further with soft, color-coordinated throw pillows—whether they're fuzzy, velvety or corduroy, soft pillows are hard to resist for a tight clutch to the chest and can make your heart swell when the stressful task of holiday shopping has you feeling like the Grinch.

3. Hang twinkly lights!

This winter, set eyes all aglow with some indoor string lights. Whether you wreathe them along your headboard or cascade them down the folds of your curtains, string lights can vitalize your night when the weather outside is frightful. We recommend bulbs that project warm white light—to cast your room in a golden incandescence that rivals that of a scattered glow of fireflies hovering over a bayou against a night sky.

If you’re applying a minimalistic approach to your décor, coiling copper-wired LED lights along your shelves and furniture offers a less cluttered appearance. And if you’re looking for some pizzazz, tuck some color-changing strobe string lights into the corners of the ceiling, press play on some music and be rockin’ around your bedroom all month long.

4. Add woodsy accents

Dust off your fir garland, and dangle it on top of your headboard, doorframe or window to bring a woodland feel to your holiday décor. Wood and wicker accents add a nice rustic touch to any living space. In the case of creating a “marshmallow world” in your bedroom, wooden fruits like pine cones and acorns get the job done—simply bundle a few in a small wicker tray or prop a small number on top of your nightstand, dresser or bookshelf.

Fashion a wall ornament out of a small yet sturdy branch by hanging it with some twine tied on both ends. Attach cascading tree stems (we recommend offshoots of artificial eucalyptus or fir) along the length of the stick with some fishing line—and fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la!

5. When in doubt, stick to the classics

To the purists at heart: there’s nothing wrong with going back to basics with boughs of holly, silver bells and brown paper packages tied up with strings. So, lean into the spirit of the season with strategic placements of nutcrackers, garland and holiday candles—we think that propping up a fresh miniature tree in a corner of your room will tie it all together like a nice velvet bow. For a warmhearted touch, we suggest sticking your tree in a round woven basket.

May red, green and gold tones abound your bedding and walls, and may you have yourself a merry December 25th.
