How To Choose The Perfect Pillowcase The Right Way

by Reyna Thomas

People don't typically put much thought into their pillowcase further than it feeling nice. But should you? How do you go about picking out a pillowcase the right way? Don't worry; we have you covered. Our experts break down exactly how to pick the best pillowcase.

A properly fitted pillowcase can do more than just protect your pillow from premature wear-and-tear. It can also shield your face from acne and other facial breakouts due to bacteria and provide you with the beauty sleep that everyone seeks at the end of the day. Knowing how to choose the correct pillowcase is the first step toward investing in one.

Pillowcase Sizes

Pillowcases are typically available in three sizes: regular, queen, and king. Each one is half the width of the associated bed. A body pillow-length pillowcase is another option. It is around twice the length of a standard pillowcase. Standard pillow sizes are reflected in pillowcases. Other pillowcase sizes are available; however, they're usually custom-created to fit. To avoid having excess fabric hanging from the end of the cushion, buy a pillowcase that is the same size as your pillow.

Thread Count

A thread count will almost always be mentioned on any pillowcase you check. If you're unfamiliar with the term, thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of material. Thread count measures the number of threads in both length and width. So, if a pillowcase or other fabric has a thread count of 600, it signifies that there are 300 threads lengthwise and 300 threads widthwise. Fabric with a thread count of 400 or higher is incredibly soft and feels lovely against the skin.

But, once you pass the 400 mark, there isn't much physical difference between materials. As a result, you should aim for a pillowcase with a thread count of at least 400. Beyond that, more does not always imply superiority.

Please keep in mind that textiles with a high thread count are more challenging to maintain. If they are not properly cleaned and maintained, they will lose the softness for which you originally purchased them.

Materials

Pillowcases are made of many materials, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.

  • Polyester pillowcases are the most affordable pillowcases on the market. They are simple to clean and keep maintained. But these aren’t particularly comfortable. They can actually be pretty harsh on the skin.
  • Silk pillowcases are the cream of the crop, being one of the most luxurious textiles ever created. It is incredibly soft, warm, and airy. Silk is a fantastic all-season fabric, so there's no need to worry about being too hot or cold.
  • Cotton is the most multifunctional fabric on the market. It's really comfortable, but not as much as silk or fleece. It can be easily infused with colors to create a variety of designs. It's also a great cooling material. At the same time, it does not provide adequate insulation. As a result, it isn't the best option for the winter. But, Cotton pillowcases have the largest advantage of being exceedingly easy to care for.
