6 Ways Technology Can Help Your Sleep

by Waverly Wilde

Smart Beds & Mattresses

When it comes to sleep, technology at bedtime isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be. Smart beds help improve your quality of sleep by tracking sleep positions through your body temperature and adjusting to different situations. If your partner is excessively snoring, the bed can automatically adjust the sleeper to find a position that will help stop the noise and reduce sleep apnea.

Sleep Apps

Instead of counting sheep, you could count how many sleep-related apps exist today--that’s how many there are! Many of these apps use movement to track healthy sleep patterns. This type of information can be used to synchronize your morning alarm, offer relaxation techniques, and play soothing music. If you have a wearable tracker, many apps coordinate with these trackers to provide even more in-depth sleep advice.

Wearable Sleep Trackers

To coincide with your sleep-related apps, wearable trackers are rapidly growing in popularity. These devices help record how many hours of sleep you get, how many times you wake during the night, and incorporate complete movement data. While you sleep, these trackers monitor heart rate and blood pressure to estimate current sleep states and how your health might be affecting a consistent, restful sleep.

Dual Climate Zones

Climate control is another compelling piece of technology that will help improve your sleep. Whether you spend too many nights rotating which leg you stick out of the covers, or constantly awake in the middle of the night to grab another blanket, you need a mattress with a dual cooling and warming system. These mattresses split the area you control into two zones--if one person needs warmth while the other prefers cool sheets, both sides of the bed can comfortably sleep. These cooling systems create flows of cool or warm air throughout the mattress to keep you toasty on cold nights or nice and cool during the summer season.

Bedside Monitoring

Sleep-monitoring devices can be placed on a nightstand or bedside table rather than tucked in bed with you. They survey your sleep environment and conduct information about sleep habits and potential distractions recurring each night. The sensors in these devices measure quality and quantity of sleep so that each morning you can access personalized advice, insights, and sleep scores based on last night’s rest.

Drift Lighting

If temperature and snoring aren’t the cause of your constant tossing and turning, it might be an issue with light. If you get in the habit of getting into bed with an electronic device close to bedtime, it can stimulate the mind and mimic daylight--keeping you awake for longer. Drift lighting helps replicate the progression of natural light and slowly fades to dark over a period of 30 or more minutes--just like a sunset. If you have trouble waking up in a dark bedroom, the same feature applies in the morning--gradually brightening the room for a smooth and easy transition to wake up feeling well-rested.
