5 Tips to Relieve Aches & Pains and Sleep More Soundly

by Michael Webster

It seems as though the older we get, more aches and pains begin to stack up against us. Sometimes it’s due to our busy schedules or exercise habits, but more often than not, it has to do with how well we sleep at night. Dealing with any type of pain can be an extreme nuisance, but it shouldn’t prevent you from getting the rest you truly need at the end of the day. Everyone deserves a restful, good night’s sleep — even when dealing with soreness and fatigue; here are 5 tips to help eliminate aches, pains, and pressure points to help you sleep more soundly.

1. Try a New Pillow

If you regularly suffer from either neck or back pain, it could be due to the pillow you rest your head on every night. Pillows can affect both your spinal and neck alignment while you sleep, so choosing the right one can really make the difference in relieving many types of pain and discomfort.

If you’re a back or stomach sleeper, a flatter pillow is generally the better choice, whereas if you’re more of a side sleeper, a thicker, more dense pillow would potentially provide more benefits.

2. Add a Mattress Topper

If you know for a fact that your pillow isn’t the issue for your nagging aches, a new mattress topper is another possible solution and a more affordable option than completely replacing your mattress. Adding either a feather or memory foam topper are both great ways to reduce pressure points and improve lumbar support if your mattress is still in decent shape.

3. More Support for Your Mattress

Another potential contributor to regular aches and pains that isn’t talked about often is insufficient or incorrect support for your mattress. As mentioned earlier, if your mattress is still in good shape, a of couple slight modifications can make a huge difference in the quality of your sleep.

Box springs that are worn out can cause sagging, as well as foam and spring mattresses feeling overly stiff on hard foundations over a long period of use. Replacing your mattress’s foundation could instantly bring relief back into your sleep routine and help rid your body of the consistent pain.

4. Modify Sleep Position (and Stretch!)

If you’re experiencing constant aches and pains every night when and after going to bed, there are a couple routines you can regularly follow to improve your quality of rest. One of those methods is to modify your regular sleeping position.

  • If you’re a back sleeper, try placing a pillow underneath both knees to elevate your ankles.
  • If you like to sleep on your stomach, placing a pillow below the hips will help alleviate several pressure points.
  • If you prefer to sleep on your side, putting a small pillow between both knees will improve both your spinal and neck alignment.

Along with adjusting your sleep position as needed, regularly stretching before and after you get out of bed can loosen up and shake out that stiffness and muscle soreness.

5. Replace Your Mattress

At this point, if none of these methods are alleviating your aches and pains while you rest, it might just be time to purchase a brand-new mattress. If your bed is more than eight years old and showing signs of wear, it very well could be time to say goodbye. A new mattress will almost certainly improve your quality of sleep, as well as assist your body in dealing with recurring aches and pains.
