How to Find the Best Mattress for Your Adjustable Bed

by Ann Ferguson

Adjustable beds upgrade your sleep to new, snooze-worthy heights. Not only will you have better sleep, but you can also alleviate pain points, insomnia, snoring, and improve your circulation. That’s a lot of good stuff.

And to get the absolute best stuff, you need a compatible mattress that is flexible and resilient, so you don’t have to worry about your mattress sagging too soon. But don’t panic; there are more options available than you think!

We’ll go over what features and mattress types work best together!

Before choosing anything else, choosing the right size is essential. With size, you’ll need the same size mattress as your adjustable base. But keep in mind that some mattresses might vary an inch or so from the standard mattress sizes, so it is crucial to measure.

Another aspect to consider is the mattress thickness since an adjustable bed will bend the head or foot of the mattress. So, you’ll want a mattress that is 8 to 12 inches thick, so it is thin enough to adjust while still providing plenty of support.

Split vs. Solid

A major benefit of an adjustable base, or power base, is the ability to customize your side of the mattress, which is huge if you and your partner have different sleep needs. But customizing your side only works if you have a split adjustable frame and a split mattress. Remember that some split mattresses are only split at the top, so only the head can be adjusted independently.

As for solid mattresses, these work fine if you’re a single sleeper or if you and your partner have similar sleep needs.

Weight Capacity

When you have an adjustable bed, you also need to consider the weight capacity. This is because some mattresses are heavier than others, like hybrid and latex, and you still need to account for your weight, too. So, to keep your adjustable frame in tip-top-shape, you’ll need to double-check the weight capacity of your adjustable frame.

With all that bending a mattress goes through on an adjustable bed frame, it needs to be durable. Otherwise, the frame will wear your mattress out long before it should. So, look for latex or high-density foam mattresses, which are less prone to sagging.

Bonus Features

Other features to consider when sleeping on an adjustable bed are noise and cooling. The power motor of a base will make some noise when it adjusts, so if you want a relatively quiet process, you’ll want a foam or latex mattress that won’t have any creaking springs.

And if you always sleep too hot, then it is essential to look for a mattress with cooling properties. Your best options are open-cell or gel-infused foam for a cooler surface or a breathable latex mattress. Either way, you’ll be sleeping sweet!

Which Mattress Type is Best?

While you find that most foam mattresses are compatible with an adjustable bed frame, you don’t have to limit yourself to only foam mattresses.

  • Hybrid: Amplifies the pressure-relieving qualities of an adjustable bed and has the flexibility to adapt to each movement.
  • Pocketed Coil: Each independent coil will adjust to every position while providing good airflow and bounce. Continuous coil innerspring mattresses are NOT compatible.
  • Latex: Highly resilient, flexible, and durable for any power base while promoting excellent pressure relief and cooling properties. It is also eco-friendly and allergen-resistant if you choose natural latex.
  • Memory Foam: Easily adjusts to different positions and provides excellent body-contouring and pressure relief for side sleepers.
  • Gel Memory Foam: Has the same properties as a memory foam mattress with better cooling components.
